Hey guys! I have been MIA for the past few days… I got a new phone last week and experienced a catastrophe when I tried to transfer my contacts… this resulted in two nights spent at Best Buy. I also went out with friends several nights last week and spent the whole weekend cleaning and doing work. I’m just catching up on everything now!
Today is Earth Day and it got me thinking about all of the ways I have tried to become more environmentally friendly as I have gotten older.
When I was younger, I didn’t think about my carbon footprint at all. I still have a long ways to go but I’ve made lots of changes in the past few years to be less wasteful.
Use a re-usable water bottle & cups
When I first started working, my job did catering and I had unlimited access to bottled water. I drank at least one every single day, if not two. I worked there for 3 years… that’s so much plastic! Now I’ve become a water bottle junkie. I carry one with me everyday and keep a Tervis cup at work. My favorite bottle is the Camelbak Eddy because I like having a straw.
Stop buying paper towels… use cloth rags instead
I purchased your standard rags on amazon and they have been great! I keep some in the kitchen and both bathrooms. I actually like cleaning with them much more than paper towels because they wipe up spills better.
Switch to Cloth Napkins
I used to be one of those people who thought cloth napkins were way too fancy. If I was given a cloth napkin, I would actually seek out paper napkins and use those instead. Now we have cloth napkins and I like them so much better than paper napkins. They are bigger and I only use 1 at dinner (whereas I was using several paper napkins). They are also super easy to toss in the laundry with our clothes.
Some other things I’ve done:
Ditched my SUV for a more fuel efficient car- this has cut our gas expenses in half
Use a regular toilet brush and cleaner rather than the wand with a disposable cleaner
Enroll in e-billing so I don’t get paper bills
When they ask, tell cashier’s that I don’t need a receipt… they just go in the trash
Avoid printing things at work… use email as much as possible
Recycle
Like I said, I know I have a long ways to go but every little bit helps!
