My fear of the dentist is pretty well-chronicled on this blog. I cannot think of anything I’m terrified more of than the idea of going there!!!
So it is no surprise that I have made getting a root canal pretty much 10x worse than it really was. First I put it off for forever. Then I got IV sedation for the root canal. And then I took lots of valium to get me through the temporary crown.
I’m not going to lie… I knew the chances of me getting my permanent crown put on right away were slim to none. Why make things easy when I can put it off for weeks so I can worry about it non-stop? The dentist office called me several times to remind me that my permanent crown was in but I ‘accidentally’ forgot to call them back for the past 6 weeks.
Then they caught me off guard and I answered their phone call last week. They straight up told me insurance wouldn’t reimburse them for my crown until it was in my mouth. So I felt like an a-hole and promptly made the appointment.
Funny Story
The receptionist told me that getting a permanent crown is no big deal. They basically just pop off the temporary one and then glue the permanent one on. No problemo! She actually told me I should be in and out in now time. So I decided I would just do it. No IV sedation. No valium. No chaperone. Just me and the good ole’ DDS.
So what ended up happening?
My temporary crown would not come off of my tooth. Not for anything! What was supposed to take 15 minutes ended up taking 1.5 hours. I had to get numbed twice and they ended up having to drill off the entire temporary crown. THIS KIND OF STUFF IS WHY I CANNOT DEAL WITH GOING TO THE DENTIST. I texted my sister the entire time but, as she kindly pointed out to me, I ended up not dying.
Thankfully, that is the end of my dental saga. Hallelujah!!!
What Being Injured Taught Me
I mentioned yesterday that I am getting back into workouts full swing. I’m so excited! I want to post about it but I’m afraid I will jinx myself. So instead, I thought I’d share some important things I learned over the past year with dealing with injuries.
#1- Variety is the spice of life:
I think we all have our thing but when it comes to working out, there IS too much of a good thing. And it can lead to injury. Cross training and strength training are super important.
#2- Listen To Your Body:
Your body is smart and it will tell you when to stop. We run into problems when we don’t listen. I think there’s a line you walk where you’re trying to push yourself to ‘feel the burn’ vs. pushing yourself into injury territory. The key is to know the difference.
#3- See a specialist:
If you want to see a doctor and insurance will permit this, I would highly recommend cutting right to the chase and seeing a specialist. You will save time, money and peace of mind.
#4- Do your freaking exercises!
Anyone who has dealt with an injury knows what a joy it is to receive that little sheet of physical therapy exercises. They are a nuisance after a while and it’s hard in the moment to feel like they’re helping. But they do help! Be consistent.
Anything special you have learned from dealing with an injury?
Do you hate the dentist?!
Ugh, going to the dentist today! I am not a fan! Truthfully I do not floss nearly enough, so I know I will be hearing about that. I am just praying for now cavities!
I wish you well for no more injuries! I think you’ve had your fair share.
omgoodness!! that sounds horrible!
i had some really bad dentist experiences when i was younger which seriously made me so terrified to go. these days though its never that bad (thank you electric toothbrush!!) and i try to fall asleep while i get my teeth cleaned haha.
I am a complete weirdo and actually like going to the dentist. I know, I hope we can still be friends. :)
Doing the “freaking exercises” is always the hardest part!!
